From Free Shared Theme to AstroWind - My Personal Blog Upgrade

Why I Switched Themes

When I first started my blog, I picked a free Astro theme created by an individual from the official Astro themes page. It was simple and got me started quickly. But over time, I realized I wanted something a bit more polished — something that looks more professional and feels like a long-term home for my content.

So I started exploring again.

The Long Search (and What I Learned)

I spent a lot of time browsing themes, jumping from one to another. Ironically, even though AstroWind is one of the most popular and well-supported themes, I initially overlooked it. Only after changing my search approach and keywords did I finally stumble upon it — and it had everything I needed.

Sometimes, the best solution is already out there. It’s just a matter of being more mindful during the search and exploring a bit deeper.

Migrating to AstroWind

Once I found AstroWind, the transition was pretty smooth:

  1. Downloaded AstroWind – Cloned the repo to start fresh.
  2. Copied My Content – Moved over my existing .md blog posts.
  3. Cleaned Up – Removed unused pages, templates, components, and links I didn’t need.
  4. Customized the Home Page – Set up a clean landing page to share information about myself.
  5. Simplified Navigation – Kept just two tabs: Home and Blog.
  6. Updated My GitHub Repo – Pushed all the new content, code, and structure to my GitHub repository.

That was all I needed. AstroWind’s setup already met 100% of my goals: a space to share who I am and a place to write and organize my thoughts.

The Result

After switching, it finally feels like my blog is on a solid, professional platform. Clean design, responsive layout, and an overall great developer experience.

Final Thoughts

What I learned from this process:

  • Don’t just skim — sometimes you miss the best options.
  • Change your search perspective or keywords when you’re stuck.
  • Start simple, but don’t hesitate to switch when the time comes.

If you’re building a personal blog with Astro, I highly recommend giving AstroWind a try.
